Randyzzz Scrambler Restification Thread!

Well, I actually made some progress on the dash. I picked up some of the paper backed foam board and started cutting. Here's some pics of where I'm at...not 100% pleased, but it's a good start. I'm finding it much easier to work with the actual components over pictures with double sided tape on the back...

I still have to allow for the indicator lights, and get the A/C vent placement right. There is still some fine tuning to the placement too...the stereo is a bit too high, and the light switches to the right of the column are too low.The blank area where the stock glove box used to be is not really deep enough to use for a glove box anymore, I'm thinking a pair of fold down cup holders.

The dash will be done in body color- should be a nice contrast with the black gauges. (Although the matte black looks pretty good too...)

Feels good to be making some progress again.:D

Tried another layout on the center section just now. I think it looks better, what do you think? The rectangle drawn below the stereo is an A/C vent. I could try and sneak the A/C control knobs (The silver knobs on the right) to the area below the gauges, 2 on each side of the vent, but I think it would be too tight.

I like your second layout better. It seems like it would be much easier to see the screen as well as all the gauges that way.

Your second layout looks much better.

A full size mockup is always a great help in finalizing design. Beautiful work as usual! Thanks for posting your progress.

Jeff

Great idea with the foamboard!

Yes, the second version looks better, but they both look good. I'm sure you'll get it just right per your high standards!

How about round vents, like the JKs have? someone makes nice billet ones for them

Angled bezels for the small gauges too!

Thanks, guys. I'll post a couple more pics tomorrow, I ended up with 2 vents under the nav unit. Balances out nicely. I may try and move the A/C controls above the headlamp switches. The 4th knob is an option I'm not sure I'll be using. I printed pictures of the louvers off of Vintage Air. Looks like Hot Rod Air, the manufacturer of my unit, is no longer in business. So much for buying the unit with the lifetime warranty...

Funny you should mention round louvers. I have 4 louvers from the back of a new F150 console. (Look like JK louvers.) They are 3" in diameter. They are an awesome design but just too big. Fitting them in was what was causing me all the earlier design headaches. I think the rectangular ones tie the shape of the nav unit in nicely.

I still have to find room for a power outlet, I may just go with the front of the shifter console.

Probably also have in-cab winch controls in the shifter console, and locker switches and aux light switches in the overhead console.

Agreed on the second layout.

I know this is late to suggest, but to me, this setup is just begging for an additional small panel just below the center panel where all of the AC knobs would go horizontally. You could weld up the lower bar for it and drill/tap holes in the underside of your current lower bar to bolt it on. That way you can have it powdercoated to match before installing it (might be cool to have that panel detachable for future service anyway). You could put your indicator lights on the ends of it as well or maybe move your switches to it.

Having the knobs on that right side panel just doesn't look quite right to me and I agree with you that it'd be very tight/busy in the center panel as it sits now.

If you move them above the rocker switches, are they going to be easy enough to reach/use?

I agree, Eric- I'm not liking the knobs to the right. I had thought about something like your drawing. I'm going to try moving the switches and see what's left for room. I could always move all the switches to the overhead, and put the A/c controls where the switches are now...

I like Eric's suggestion of the lower setup of the knobs. Randy. that's a sweet setup you've got.

Slightly off topic question Randy, where'd you get the switch panel you have there? I have a bunch of those switches I'm planning on using to move all my random different switches to one panel. I'd need an unloaded version of what you have for like 6 switches.

You just went and got too cool a stereo see :D A normal DIN unit and there'd be plenty of space on that center panel. ;)

I got the panels from http://www.digikey.com/ They have just about everything. There is a six switch version, and a modular version that will expand to any amount.

I did a bit more mock-up work. Added A/C vents, and moved the A/C switches. I figure the light switches can go in the overhead. 9 switches up top...should look like a plane!

How's this look...

Of course, the A/C knobs will be black, as will the A/C vents. Do you think the outer side vents would look better round? The right side panel looks pretty bare now.

Gotta have the cool stereo...The size will be well worth it when using the Nav feature. I just picked up a neat single DIN stereo for next to nothing. It's a Sony shockproof CD with a built in 10Gig hard drive. Sounds awesome in the Cherokee. The CD tray is like a laptop tray. If it did Nav/DVD I'd use it...

Winner winner chicken dinner! Just have to find something to add to the right side panel now.

I think the vents should all match personally.

I think the vents should all match also. A little off topic but was wondering if you are going to use the o/d button on the shifter for the tow haul or are you doing something else? I am trying to decide what shifter do use.

Thanks, guys. I won a set of four matching Vintage Air vents on EBay for $9.99 :) Going to order metal tomorrow, probably cut it over the weekend, paint it the weekend after.

The button on the shifter...I had thought tow/haul, but I really don't need that and I have driven GM's with tow/haul engaged and I really don't like it. Then I read how the Gen3 ECM's are capable of two programs (Normal and Power, for example) that can change by momentarily grounding a lead. If that doesn't work, I'll think of something cool...

I would think you'd want the vents at the top? cold air sinks and all. I think it would be a better line to hitting you with cold air.

I know Jeep had it at the bottom but that's cause it was obviously an afterthought. and made my knee SUPER COLD, but nothing else.

This is One nice build, and I really like the way you have done the dash.
