SJScrambler - Getting Started

Got the front hoop feet cut off and did some positioning and trying to see what works.
The bars are tweaked from cutting them up and just in general over time these things twist (and shrink it seems).
So, the feet aren't lining up exactly where I want them to, but the spacing to the front and side to side is correct... and it is level... so close enough on this one, I have spent too much time trying to get it perfect.

I plan on getting out there today and tacking that front bar in place and cutting up the back bar and putting the spacers in... we will see how far I get... cutting those feet off took some time and ate up a few discs... not sure I have enough to finish the job today.

Still plugging away... life gets back on track tomorrow, so I should have more time.

Had to drop this off at Fastenal as well, so that slowed me down a bit:

After that, got the front bar tacked in

20181230_152433_resized.jpg

Since where the connectors will be, I had to repair the bar

and the other side as well where I cut it off

20181231_163648_resized.jpg

Had to cut off the feet as well.

Test fitting and seeing how it all lines up now

Definitely need a couple more stand offs and I have to extend the rear feet plates, but it is definitely coming along... lots of measuring and trial and error

The more I see it, the more I like the double hoop roll bar. I can't see how the back feet are going to look. Such a cool project.

Very nice. Looking great ! Couple more and you can mass produce them.

More on the fabrication front... needed extensions for the back plates and a couple more spacers... just work, nothing exciting.

Ran a tape line down... the bars just barely clear the wheel well... I think I have it figured out finally.

Just need to make the plates and cut some more tube for extensions and we can mock it in place.

When you extend the back of the foot plate you could also kick it up the same angle as the sheet metal box (similar to the late 82 and up foot plates with the tie down slot) and that might help depending on how far the tail end of the tubing goes back.

You read my mind, I was out back last night looking at the rollbar for the other Scrambler and was thinking about the kick up... I might add it in, might not, all depend on how these plates work out and where the pipe hits them... it is still trial/error at this point.

Not much going on... too many other things taking my time these days... however, I got some feet made... next up is to get all 6 spacers to fit equally between the tubes so they stand off equally.

The feet need a bit more clean up and sanding/grinding, but once the rollbars up front are tacked in place, I have a pad now for the tubes to be extended to.

It looks like you're a self taught expert on fish mouth cuts. Really a cool fabrication project!

Just learning as I go... pushing myself to learn new things...definitely a step above my known comfort zone, which is partly why it takes longer, but all in all I am happy with how it is turning out.

Conceptually I get it in my mind... but when it comes to doing it, the amount of time is a lot more than I expected.
Those shows on TV get it done in 1 hour ;)

Yea the TV give a false sense. A complete rebuild in 7days in an hour show. 7 seven years so far on my CJ6.

Yea the TV give a false sense. A complete rebuild in 7days in an hour show. 7 seven years so far on my CJ6.

If I could put in 40-50 hours a week doing this, I am sure things would go a lot faster, but the fact of the matter is I am lucky if I get an hour a night during the week and a few on the weekend... this is probably a 1000 hour build judging on the past ones that were more in the 600-700 hour range. So, even that math says it is a 2 year project minimum, but with the way life always seems to get in the way, 10 hours a week is somewhat of a pipe dream... especially in the nicer weather. It is next to impossible to work on this in the summer time, just too much going on.

Before kids, a lot more time... with kids and all that comes with it around the house/yard, etc. it will just take longer.

It is all good though, I wouldn't change anything.
It will get done when it gets done.

Well, got a bit done this weekend... have one side done and tacked in, the other side I ran out of time... it is getting there.

Who knew?
20190104_164907_resized.jpg

Making sure they are close...

20190104_173005_resized.jpg

Lots of grinding and getting galv weld pain on there

20190104_173013_resized.jpg

20190104_183126_resized.jpg

Tacking the front all up:

20190105_162230_resized.jpg

Down tubes now... lots of cutting and fitting.

20190106_153332_resized.jpg

20190106_155416_resized.jpg

The angle came in at 34 degrees... stock is about 36ish, so I am happy with it. It appears like stock from the sides. Plates in the rear only needed a mild extension, so those will be bent up like the originals after 81:

20190106_162843_resized.jpg

NOTE: If you look closely I think this is an 83 and an 84... one is rounded and one is squared off on the edges, never noticed that.

20190106_155431_resized.jpg

I used the wood shim and there is a nice space between the bar and the wheel well, just can't get it pictured right.

Other side (not done, still needs some trimming) :

After 2 full rollbars, here is the scrap:

20190106_163145_resized.jpg

I need to make some beer holders or something out of it now that I know they fit nicely.

Finally some shots trying to show the overall look... I think it came out pretty good:

20190106_164746_resized.jpg

20190106_164823_resized.jpg

It needs final welding and a whole lot of time with a sandblaster and smoothing out some areas, but all in all it is almost done and I can move onto finishing up the front over the next few weeks.

It took WAAAAAY longer than I would have thought it would have to do this, but in the end, I think I got something that looks like it cold have come factory, uses all original parts/pieces and will give it a nice retro look when I am done with the KC's on top.
