I was telling my wife last night what a great bunch of guys you all are. I told her about the response to my brake drum dilema, and that got me to thinking about something....

I deduced that between most all of us we probably had enough parts to make up a Scrambler from scratch....It would be kinda cool to have one built from parts that we all pitched in. One that was pretty much stock that reflected the the way Scramblers were originally. We could use it spread "Scrambler Awareness" at Jamboree's, car shows and the like....

Of course I don't have any details of how this would be accomplised, who would do the work, where it would be kept, etc. But I think it's a neat idea....

We could have each Geographical area responsible for some aspect of the assembly.....northeast could do the engine, Southwest the Body, Northwest Tranny, southeast running gear....Then we could haul all the parts to Arkansas for the national and assemble it all in one weekend.....We could get some press coverage, get some sponsors to kick in free parts....

It's just an idea I had.....

Love the idea. It'd be a fun challenge and good story. Good stories are hard to find. And, it'd be fun to send a film crew along. I volunteer to edit it all together if we can find some good camera men to capture the action. Then we can send it to Discovery Channel:D.
 
I volunteer JeepWriter's (if that is, indeed, his real username) rust-free tub for the project...it's mint! :D

I feel your pain...I have 3 small kids and a rusty Scrambler myself....I just thought I'd throw it out there and see where it goes....I think it would be cool...
 
I volunteer:
-one 2.73 AMC20 with a posi unit
-rear brake drums
-stock ignition components (computer, dizzy, wires, coil)
-Misc. internal engine components
-rusty tailgate

and most importantly...
-storage at my house once complete!! :D :D :D I'll take lots of pictures of me driving it to post up here!

I can throw in a motor with 7000 original miles and a 999 tranny. It will need a carb, but it runs...Also can throw in a fuel tank...

If this were done, can we raffle it off and proceeds can go to the firefighters relief fund here in tennessee.. The relief fund helps professional firefighters who have been injured or battling illness.. The money helps cover medical costs, income supplement from lost work, and family recovery, etc. etc...

If I were to coordinate such an effort, would ya'll agree to send the proceeds to the relief fund? I could garner MUCH support and publicity here in Tennessee through the vast network of professional firefighters..(*This would include labor for different mechanical aspects from firefighters whose off duty jobs are automobile related, such as paint and body work)...Not to mention the publicity I could get us through the IAFF and the Tennessee Professional Firefighters...

However, we as a group can do most of the wrenching and I even volunteer my house as home base...I have plenty of room and even places to sleep...The Scrambler guys would get all the KUDOS and the relief fund gets a boost...

Just an idea...

Interesting idea!:cool: If we could actually get one put together, it would be cool to have it at the national events and we could build it more each year. Maybe the President of the Scrambler Owners Association could keep it throughout his/her term!

Hey, it's a long shot, but after seeing some of the mechanical skill of the Scrambler owners I've met, I have no doubt that it could be done, if people wanted to do it.

Just saw Hank's posting about raffling it off and donating proceeds to a worthy organization (we must have been typing/posting at the same time). NOW somebody's thinking!! Great idea, Hank!

I'm actually liking this idea.

It would be a great PR tool for the SOA,
would be a source of much fellowship
would probably net from 5 to 10 K for either the right charity or charities (multiple charities would be cool! Like Hanks, Blue Ribbon Coalition, etc all in the name of the SOA!!
Time frame for building it shouldn't matter.
We could "house" it in the East for awhile, then (say) in Colorado, then the West, North West, etc in a passing of the torch kind of way so everyone can work on it.
A "handoff" could occur at the next meet in Arkansas so it could head out West.

I really think this would be fun & could bring the SOA to the next level!
 
eBay holds those charity auctions for worthy causes... talk about traffic and publicity!

I think that the only way that it would work is to do it like Bill suggested and have all of the major components built in different areas then a giant wrench-fest at the national to get it assembled. I'd give up a day on the trails to work on this HAPPILY. Maybe it could be a pre-weekend event to get things kicked off and make people want to show up nice and early.

We could try to get "Overhaulin" or "Rides" in on it as a special episode outside of their normal location (they've got to be looking for new and different stuff by now).

They have power at the Superlift park and somoeone could bring a 125 VAC compressor with air tools. We could rent a tent specifically for the assembly area in case of bad weather. Some shop lights, jacks and stands, a fold-down engine hoist and the tools we all already carry should take care of the rest...

We could set up in the corner of the parking lot nearest to the office.

Get some local auto store to donate the fluids, battery, grease and all the little miscelaneous generic stuff so we don't have to ship it.

I think donating it to a charity is a great idea as well, I think since it's a Jeep thing, and we're a national organization the proceeds ought to go toward something that ties it all together. Not to demean anyone's charity, I'm sure we all have worthwhile causes we like to support. I just think it ought to be jeep related somehow....

Don't let JC near it, though...it'll end up 14" shorter and nobody will believe that it's truly a Scrambler.

Oh, and rather than trying to get lots of companies to donate parts and things (outside of fluids and junk like I mentioned), I think it would be that much cooler if we did it with the spare parts we all would be willing to chip in with.

I've seen these types of things done where it turns into a bling-fest on account of companies sending in all these fancy and pretty parts (which IS generous, but I can never get past the marketing/publicity angle). I'd like to see this be something truly built out of what we can supply.

Key things like tires might be good to get donated, but I like the spirit of the spare parts scrambler, not an aluminum tubbed, AFW framed, superlifted, tera 60'd, teflon-coated-rimmed thing. (How cool would that be to own though :D)

Just another random thought.
 
The big question is, where would a quality tub and/or frame come from? Given the current value of Scrambler stuff, a good project base may be hard to come by.

Also, it may be easier to build a project vehicle that isn't stock (but still may be stock-ish), given that going stock usually equates into more $$$, if even for the little stuff.

To get the project started Let those companies contribute all they can! We raffle off the parts (to all 4x4 boards, not just here) & use the proceeds for the project- to buy a chassis & tub :)
 
I'm loving this idea! I am somewhat limited on my spare stock parts at this point... I've sold off quite a few of them to other Jeepers. What I do have is certainly up for use though.

A branch of the TX4WD organization is trying to do the same thing. First thing they did was look for a good donor vehicle. I think this would be the best place to start. They are still doing this. Some other ideas on how to do it have come up. All the legalities will need to be hashed out before it was started. This would allow them to sell tickets early. Also, for all donated parts, half of fair market may be given in tickets to the donor. tickets sold early would help with the $ effort.

I don't know if there are any Jeep related charities but I would like to see it go to a National charity not any one area should benifit from it. I like the Fireman idea or public servicemen idea. With the war going on, whether supported or not, We have fallen soldiers and their families are suffuring.

There is an organization for the families. Just my $.015
 
By the way, I am in 100% and will help anyway I can.

One route to go is to make a Scrambler look alike on an old K5 blazer frame and stretched wrangler body. I can have the extension panels made. The blazer was the same wheelbase I think. Just a way to get the frame and body issue worked out. I think that would be hardest. Dollar wise that is.

I know where they will be a frame becoming available that is in pretty good shape.. :+) very solid.. was planning to sell it to use some to pay for the new frame... but.. we might be able to work something out....

I was planning on sandblasting it even before I sold it anyways..

hard part is coming up with a title. I don't have a title to go with the frame..

technically, the way I read the previous postings.. is the title is technically supposed to go with the FRAME and THE TUB.

if we did it.. we would definitely want a legitimate scrambler title and not a kit car.
