What's on your Work Bench?

Installing hurricane windows all around, resheathing with 3/4" plywood and new HardyBoard siding. I have to do something to keep myself busy while I wait for my new engine.... Kim Dawson is making me look lazy. But I figure it might be hot, but at least it's humid. 20230720_101116.jpg

And this is what $750 worth of cedar looks like in today's brave new world. Then 30 minutes to check out at Home Depot - one register, 3 folks on break. What is wrong with this world today?!

You are supposed to self check out at all stores now, YOU are responsible for suppling the labor FOR the store.

I would say at least you have a pool to dive into to cool off, but it’s probably a hot tub unless you are tossing ice blocks into it every day.

Working on a variety of things keeps life interesting. Chamba your house if looking good. I didn't see any ready made seat upholstery in blue, so I decided to cover them myself in blue leather to match the wheel and dash on the Scrambler. Last night I removed the covers and made patterns. I also found out my engine guy is too busy with his new job to do my engine, so looks like I'll be picking it up and doing it myself. I haven't done an engine since I was a kid . . . and that was many decades ago!

Yep just dropped $4k on cedar siding last weekend for an extension, not done yet either. Mind that's a lot lot cheaper than windows and skylights etc.

I hear you. My hurricane windows were nearly $60,000 for the whole house- with me installing them! 7 years ago I had an estimate to buy them and have them installed for $28,000. Man, I wish I'd done it then.

Hardyboard siding had gone silly too: $14/ stick. When I built my kids' treehouse years ago I paid about $4/ stick.

Getting there though.

OMG. Almost 25 years ago I replaced 10 windows ( well made aluminum ) for over 4K and I thought that was a lot of money at the time because most people were getting vinyl windows installed. They are not hurricane windows. I’ve had plywood window covers for over 30 years that work well and just take a few hours to put on so I’m good for big storms. I’ve got a few more I would like to replace, but maybe I have waited to long at those inflated prices

Code if you live within 1 mile of the beach. But what really drove prices insane here was hurricane Ian. Many policies are being cancelled if the home-owner doesn't do a new roof and hurricane windows. Once your policy is cancelled here right now it can be nearly impossible to find a replacement.

If I ever actually pay this house off I will cancel my policy and self- insure. Sadly, I can't do that while still owing on my mortgage.

I like the idea of self-insure. But it’s a real gamble, also with the number of storms it seems actually hitting or just missing. Insurance prices are getting crazy around here also. In the next few years, somethings going to break I believe.

Finished these up today. Need a little time in the sun. I was going to do the purse strap thing but no response from the guy that had them made. Now if the place that sell the molded carpets will return my messages, I could get blue carpet and install these seats. People seem less responsive these days.

Scored a bumper for the LJ new for $75 from the scratch and dent quadratech tent. I almost didn't feel bad about massaging it with a 10.'bs hammer to clear the superwinch S9000.

After installing a pair on the Scrambler, I finished up the others. The old pair were grey like old barn wood. I had bought them as patterns but decided I could bring them somewhat back to life. A course sanding belt, some stain, and some satin clear and they will go well on my mostly survivor Scrambler someday.
