Yep, got my issue 2 days ago. Great, congrats Jeff. Too bad you didn't get your mug in a final closing shot.

Thanks! You can see my fingers on the wheel on page 30, and my elbow out the window on page 31. That's all of me anyone needs to see :)

Got my issue Saturday. Almost peed my pants when I saw the article. I'm yelling at the better half "hey, I know this guy!!" (well, even though it's just over the internet). Good write up, but this thread is way better. Too bad they don't link to build threads. Of course, everyone in the Jeep universe has probably seen it by now, if not here, then over on JF.

My wife's comment, considering that we are struggling with a rusted out bed right now, was "hey, why don't you make me a bed like that? I have started looking back through 60 pages of this thread, but how 'bout a good shot of that pretty bed? I'll probably never get around to attempting anything that involved, but would like to file it away for inspiration anyway.

:) I'm sure there must have been a bed shot somewhere in the thread, but how about this one...

Finally got to read the article today.

I was hoping they'd mention something about the attention to the tiny details, like the emblems/stickers and things that give it the true feel of a factory build. Still an awesome article though! Glad they managed a shot with the hard top too.

Wow, that's nice! All it needs is a greasy/leaky old 401 sitting back there waiting for your next project.:D

Congrats on the Retro Wrangler article in Jp. The magazine could benefit exponentially from a monthly column following your builds. I enjoyed following along on this site and can't believe you're not formally schooled in body work. Good job!!

So I'm not the only one who did that...:D

yeah i did that too.... mine actually sat though most of the build thread when i showed her. she thought it was awesome... then i showed her the Guacho build thread... she thouught that was awesome too!!!

Thanks! I'd really enjoy writing a column like that, but I doubt JP would be interested. I think my work falls in the no-man's land between all the magazines, and there isn't a place for it in any of them -

JP - focus on off-road, suspension lifts, bolt-on cold air intakes, building axles and swapping springs, tire reviews. Occasional articles on scoring cheap Jeeps.

4 Wheeler, 4WD & Sport Utility, Petersons's - same as the above but even less emphasis on fabrication and less emphasis on Jeeps.

As far as I can recall, none of the 4WD-type magazine has ever run an article on custom bodywork.

Classic Trucks, Custom Classic Trucks - good emphasis on fab, but they're not interested in anything newer than the 60's it seems. BTW I sent them an article on the plastic bed wood in the Retro, I figured they would be interested because just about every truck they feature has an "unusably pretty" real wood bed and maybe some of their readers would like to actually use their truck, they rejected the article on the grounds that it might offend their advertisers that sell real bed wood.

Street Rodder - the best fab magazine out there, but they've already got the custom build experts writing for them and they don't care about Jeeps anyway.

Vintage Truck - mostly about restoration, never about custom fab, and definitely not interested in anything newer than the 70's. They do a fair number of classic and historic Jeep articles though, actually way more than JP does. :( Kind of like how JP magazine used to be in that regard (or how jRations was, I miss that magazine!) Again BTW, after the Classic Trucks magazines rejected the bed wood article, I sent it to Vintage Truck, they said they'd like to publish it.

Mini-Truckin' - they do some fab stories, but all of their trucks are "scraping frame" low.

Street Trucks - all about bling.

Did I miss a magazine where my stuff might fit? There doesn't seem to be a place for building custom Jeeps...

So it would seem I'll have to stick to the forums, that's the only place where there are no editors to reject my content :) I suppose the forum moderators could reject me, or you guys could collectively if you don't read what I post...

What about Jeep Freek. It is an Online Magazine, not sure if they pay but I think that they are getting a bigger following and they really do Jeep stuff all over the place.

http://www.jpfreek.com/

Also there is that Jeep/Off Roading magazine from Canada.

These are worthwhile checking out. I like them both.

I looked at JPFreek once a while back and my recollection is that it was mostly a "Jeep outdoor lifestyle" magazine with very litte tech, but I could be wrong - I'll check them both out.

rockcrawler.com is a very real possibility. They're the ones that accepted my idea of writing about the trip back from Alaska with the postal when none of the magazines would even write back. He tries to cover everything from new Jeep models and concepts to rockcrawling comps. Pretty good following I'd say.

Mike's the editor there (though his email is full/bouncing, I tried him on something else last week) and he went out of his way to make it happen and even got me the 4wd Hardware sponsorship.

I'd bet he'd run the series.

I guess I don't see how writing for a digital magazine would be any better for me than posting in a forum. In a forum I can post what I want, when I want, and get very useful real-time feedback to help me with my projects. A digital magazine would be restrictive, subject to the whims of editors, and wouldn't offer feedback. Also as far as I know, none of the digitals are offering compensation for authors.

Looks like Mike has let www.rockcrawler.com slip a lot.

He opend a brick and mortor 4x shop in Alabama, It is to couple with his online shop.

Nice guy who is trying to make it in the 4x4 biz. He is actually a member here but I think that he ended up selling off his Scrambler. He had a Silver and Blue one.

Anyways, The Jeep Freek magazine is run mostly by one guy and the lifestyle things was an easy way for him to get started. The magazine is really about everything Jeep related. I bet that if you talk with him he would be happy to have you help and write columns for him. Not sure what the money would be like though. But Internet distribution is the wave of the publishing future.

To be honest, I'd have to say it was a bit anticlimactic - I had known the atrticle was coming about 8 months, and my son and I took all the photos and I supplied the writer all the the technical details and the story, so when it finally came out it felt like no surprise. I suppose I should be more excited about it, but every time I drive it someone comments, stops me to talk about it, or gives me a "thumbs up" from a passing car, so the Retro gets recognition pretty much on a daily basis.

I don't mean any of this to take away from the nice job Verne Simons did writing the article, I'm very pleased with what he wrote, and I'm glad JP decided to do a feature on it.
