The bottom lip on the Classic Enterprises replacement piece wasn’t an exact match, but was close, so I had to manipulate the original lips a bit to get everything to fit properly. It’s pretty close, and will be hidden by the rocker trim moulding anyway. This part is done and in primer at the moment to prevent any flash rust for the interim. Next will be a skim of body filler to hide the welded area, and then paint. Nice to have a smooth, no-rust rocker again.D7A45969-F738-4FDE-929A-B02EEF0A8ED2.jpeg

Well, a month has gone by and yesterday I finally hit the passenger rocker with the filler and got it smoothed out. I’d gotten sidetracked the previous weekend with removing ethanol sludge from the Carter BBD (reinstalled the driver seat so I could drive it around a bit and couldn’t get gas to the carb bowl. The inlet and needle were nicely gunked up).

Back to the filler: I used Evercoat Edge filler for the rockers as this area gets a beating over time. I’ll use Evercoat Gold on some of the other areas. This worked well on the CJ5.

I used a long sanding block with 3M 40 grit to knock the filler down, then moved 80, then 180.

The wind was howling yesterday, and the water oaks are shedding those little fuzzy pods, so I’d have to apply the filler in the garage, wait about 15 min, then pull it out in the driveway to sand. It was a tiresome, but man, what a workout, hunched over sanding like a madman for about 3-4 hours! Body men don’t get paid enough!! I’ve still got a section that needs to be reworked on the bottom rear area (and more final sanding to the very bottom lip of the rocker), and a couple of pinholes to fill. I’m sore this morning. And I’ve still got to do the other side!

Looks good, did you use use a guide coat. I gotta stop by a body supply shop when they reopen here and see what they have now. Been 20 years since I went to one. Gonna need some stuff for mine soon.
I just can't understand the DA sander on the fender.:eek:20200329_101842.jpg

Haha! You’d understand the DA sander on the fender if you saw the condition of the paint on that fender and everywhere else. The WHOLE Jeep is going to be repainted. :P

Yes, I used guide coat(s) and more to come. If I had it to do over, I’d have used the entire Classic Enterprises panel. The whole lower body has panel warpage on each side, so it will never be perfect, but I do want whatever I put on there to be straight!

Barry-
Here is a pic of that fender the DA sander was resting on. Now you know why I’m using it as a tool shelf. Someone shot some runny paint on it in its former life! (Not sure why pic isn’t oriented the right way)77377408-EE45-4157-9574-A1AFBCE95A54.jpeg

I remember looking at folks projects that would sit for years without being finished, and now realizing that I’m “one of them”. One excuse I do have is I’ve been playing whack-a-mole with 2 other CJ-5’s, a Wagoneer and a YJ. These things will keep a man busy!

Anyway, I did a bit more piddling with the Scrambler, and last Friday night stayed out of the cocktails so I would be good and fresh on Saturday morning, as the weatherman said “no significant wind” in the forecast, so I knew this was my window to shoot the Raptor liner in the cab. I like to shoot this stuff outside because, with an attached garage, my wife isn’t thrilled about having her lasagna dish smell like a dash of fresh 2K polyurethane has been mixed in. Now, for those of you that are about to have a heart attack that I would dare choose to spray bedliner in the cab, hear me out: After purchasing this vehicle I found the floor pans (footwell and rear) had been heavily patched. I completely cut out the fronts and butt-welded replacements in, but also found a few small lapwelded patches that were structurally sound elsewhere. My back and crowded workspace simply didn’t want to tolerate cutting out and replacing the ENTIRE floor. Every Jeep I’ve ever had, I press into service, so I want it to look presentable but also have no plans to cover it in a garage and only drive on Sundays to car shows. So, with all that said, I’ve always had great luck with Raptorliner. It’s durable, easy to apply and covers up some of those “imperfections”. I used the tintable Raptor, and mixed it with the factory “Oriental Red”. Next up is some final exterior body sanding and it will be time to shoot the rest (in base/clear of course)! Looks great! I should do do this with mine. I used Raptor on my 53, agree that its a great product. I painted the floor in my 8 with urethane 4 or 5 years ago. Next time it will get Raptor as its already pretty scuffed up with relatively light use.

Thanks, and I agree! I used Raptor in my '81 CJ5 and it's truly been impressive how well it has held up. What's interesting is the cab floor in this Scrambler has had a way tougher life than the bed! (The condition of the bed was a major factor in my purchase of this one, anyway). My plan is to do base/clear in the bed and throw a rubber mat in there when I haul anything with it.

I really wish the PO's along the way hadn't let someone lap weld those patches in there. It was so tempting to cut everything out and make it more seamless, but I'm really anxious to start driving this rig again.

I think raptor liner is perfect for certain builds. I got it done for better durability and to hide some poor welds as well. I'm very happy with it 👍

I used black Raptor in my bed and I couldn’t be happier. It looks great and with my rethink on the color scheme it will be a nice contrast. That red sure looks good though!

Randy you definitely can’t go wrong with the classic black in the bed! The contrast does look good!

Pman is like a cicada. Good to see you drop in.
I spit out my coffee this morning when I read that! Bwahahaha! I’ll try not to go underground again!

I did manage to hit the transmission tunnel cover with the cheapo Harbor Freight sand blaster. Man, let me tell you, that thing is actually somewhat impressive when it’s pushed by a decent compressor (in my case a Quincy 60 gal). Stripped the rust and paint off in minutes!
Treated it with Zinc Phosphate and may hit this with some remaining black Raptorliner I have laying around. Nothing exciting but I know y’all like “pitchers”...
Note the snapped off t-case shifter knob. I’m apparently not the only one that’s done that. I have a replacement!

That's awesome. I really need one of those before I get into the body repair I need to do.
