Deal is done

Well,

Mike (BadKarma) and his wife left yesterday after we spent a few hours going over everything on the Jeep(they looked pretty tired on the way out). He found a few things I did not notice, so we had a little more work than I thought we would:banghead:.

I guess that was my last wrenching session on my Jeep:(. I am really sad to see it go, but I am thrilled that it went to someone that would take good care of it. I think they were happy with the purchase and excited to start their trip home.

I want to thank all of you on this forum, even though I only met travelnman in person, I learned a lot, and appreciate all the friendly and helpful advise (you guys rock).

I have some pictures, but I am having a hard time linking them (pm me if you would like to host them).

Now off to my next adventure. It's a 2010 BMW F 800GS to compliment my KTM 450. I got the riding bug a few years ago, and LOVE it.

I hope I am welcome to still come and check out whats going on here!

THANK YOU ALL!

Hello from the route 66 motel in Seligman, Arizona! We left from Bryan's (redscram) yesterday around 530pm in Aptos, ca and made our south on CA-1, right along the coast... We hoped to make Bakersfield and crash there. But around 1100 the ALL exterior lighting went out. Pulled over (lucky we didn't go off the guard rail less road) and was able to bypass the switch. Drive for a while longer then decided to pull over and sleep... In the Scrambler!!! Wife on one back seat and me on the two front seats... Very comfortable... Yeah no...
This morning made it to Bakersfield and got supplies at walmart and autozone. Got a spare tire and anther head light switch from "pick up salvage co". Great guys to deal with! Lots of Jeep parts. Even tool pics of Scrambler for their website!!
Anyways... Long day, more details later... Oh ya! Averaging about 16 mpg!! Not bad for a fully loaded, lifted Jeep!!!
Tomorrow morning have a few things to fix before we head to the grand canyon then Moab!!!! :)

AWESOME!!! (Well except that the lights went out on you, but cool that you got it going again) Sleeping in the Scrambler... sweet!

On the MPG, are you using a GPS or do you know that the speedo gear matches the tires/axle gears? Just checking :)

Using gps. But the speedo is pretty close. Sent you a text yestrday did you get it? 6am here time to start working on it.. Thermostat, power port, and a couple othe things.

Nice!! I didn't get any texts yesterday :(

All done. Changed thermostat, was 195ish put a 180 in. Should run cooler. Changed upper rad hose, installed 12v assessory plug, installed rear view mirror, fixed shifter boot (30000 degree wind heating up our cooler, counter productive). And reorganized the cargo space, makes sense now.

Sending u a pm BW...

Trip Home

Mike,

WOW, lights went out? Glad nothing serious happened., and you were able to deal with it. That wasn't on Highway 1 along the coast was it? There are some seriously nasty cliff sections along there.

I wanted to post the pictures of you guys leaving, but my computer crashed at home. I need to get them off the drive.

16 MPG is about what I was getting on the highway.

Hope the rest of the trip is less eventful (mechanically speaking).

Bryan

Looks to me that you will have that 8 totally rebuilt by the time you get home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good Luck what a great trip.

Yea, I guess you could put the seats/bed on the body shop floor while it's getting painted. Heck with the fumes and all, you might even sleep better?

Now the boring part.....The drive from the Grand Canyon to Moab thru the indian reservation....

The drive from the Grand Canyon to Moab (sorta) wasnt totally boring / uneventful.

we made it to the Grand Canyon perfectly, no issues. What a place! thats one big *** hole in the ground!
after GC we started heading towards the 4 corners monument (where AV, UT, NM & CO meet), about 30ish miles out of a toen i cant remember the name of the engine started to sputter and quit. after tinkering with a few things (looking for a ghost basically) we tried and she fired up and ran perfectly again... we made it another couple miles then it quit again. figuring it was a heat related problem (it was 42 degrees C, or about 106 F) dicovered the fan clutch was done. took the fan out and wired it solid. put it back in and now the Jeep would only turn over and not start. fueling issue. swapped out the fuel pump with the spae one we had, still nothing. suspect fuel clog somewhere. fuel rail is getting fuel bbut not much pressure.
the Jeep quit around 4:30 local time and i finally gave up around 10:30. I was on the phone giving A.A.A. our location when a guy with a double flatbed with 2 2010 Wranglers on it pulled up and asked where we were heading. We said, we just want to get about 30miles to the next town to we could get the Jeep fixed. He said... you're gonna love this... "Well I'm heading to Moab, both Jeeps are drivable. We can put the Scrambler on the trailer and you drive the Wrangler"
My jaw hit the sand... :)
so after a 3ish hour drive to Moab, we left the Scrambler at the guys shop... turns out he is from Farabees Jeep Rental. (dont know if hes the owner or just and employee. think the owner... (more details later when i go back to thank him.)
He said keep the JK and get a hotel and come back in the morning... great guy! 21 hours of being awake.. fun fun fun!
so fast forward to this morning... got the Jeep off loaded and they towed the Jeep to Moab 4x4 Outpost. guys are working on it right now. suspect fuel pump or other fueling issue. but are checking other stuff too. getting an oil change and a new fan clutch while we are at it. if its the fuel pump we're gonna buy two just in case..

all in all, so far a great trip. we expected hic ups and we have actually got alot less than I was expecting. Jeep drove through the Mojave desert with no issues at all. figued it would have over heated at least once...

This is quite the adventure. we have some kick *** pics, wish i could post them up right now. We are having a blast!!!

but now, i going to go get some sleep... I think i've had about 10 hours in the past 5 days.

Bryan, head lights went out on the coastal highway 1. it was scary, but we were luck i saw the shoulder when they quit. :) we are having a blast. dont feel bad about whats going on. we were prepared for this. ;) its all part of the fun of driving a 25+ year Jeep aross the country!!!

more updates later... must... sleep... :)

It takes a set of brass knockers to do what you guys did... Chicks like adventure, or so they say!!

Jeep has been at Moab 4x4 Outpost since 8am. I talked to them around noon. Said they tried a different fuel pump and they're getting good pressure. Engine still won't start. They are getting spark too. We have booked another room for tomorrow night just in case.
There are alot of tshirt stores in Moab! We are tired. Think it's time for a nap...

problems in utah

Mike,

Any chance its the CPS?

There is a spare in the parts, or maybe you already tried that. I hope you get going soon. I know you have a tight schedule.

Checking this thread makes me nervous. I do not like hearing that you are having problems. Hopefully this be the last last thing you have to deal with.

There is also a fuse on the firewall for the engine wiring harness, I doubt that is it, but you might check.

Bryan

Just talked to them. Still not running. They are still trouble shooting.
There was spark when I was checking it. Which means CPA is fine. Where is the fuse on the firewall?

Fuse

Mike,

The fuse is near the relays. it is screwed to the firewall (dead center). I believe it is a 15 amp. But if I remember you will not get saprk if it is burned out.

Can't hurt to try the CPS. You also have a spare computer if they want to try that.

Seems like a head scratcher spark and fuel but won't run?

Bryan
