Scrambler purchase and 5000+ KM road trip home...

Ok now this is getting weird... They changed the coil cuz they suspected a weak spark... She started right up and ran perfectly. Shut it off, then started it again, fine, shut it off, then it wouldn't start again... They are gonna try the spare computer now. They are as confused as I am.

Long way home

Mike,

I know it seems obvious, but did you try to replace the ignition wire from the dizzy to the coil?
If it started after the coil was replaced, maybe it was the wire.

There was also an extra dizzy in the parts I gave you.

Also, cycling the key on-off-on-off-on will give you an error code (flashing the MIL light on the dash) if the computer recorded an error code.

Sorry, and I hope you get it figured the problem out soon.

No reply

I do not know if they got it running. I am hoping no news is good news. They were only posting when they had internet access.

I hope we hear from them soon.

Bryan

Good point, maybe tonight they will stop for a room and let us know whats going on.

IT'S ALIVE!!!!! (insert mad scientist laugh here)

alright here's the update you have all been waiting for.

Thursday night; the boys at Moab 4x4 stayed late and worked on her. Got her running.
Friday morning; while Connie (my better half) slept in, I took a walk to Moab 4x4. All the guys were so excited to tell me they got her going. So I paid Steve for parts and labor. Started her up, left the parking lot and started to head into Moab under the Scrambler's own power.... Then about 500ft down the road, she quit, dead, again. :(
called Steve and he sent Buck down in his Toyota to pull the Scrambler back to the shop.
Connie ended up renting a JK for us from Farabee's (the guy who rescued us) So we could get around for the day. Richard gave us a deal on the rental too. (awesome guy, we owe him alot)
so anyways we are at Moab 4x4, I'm helping Buck troubleshoot the Jeep... We worked on it for the whole day till after they closed.
Here's a list of what we replaced over the 2 days....
Fuel pump and filter
fan clutch
ignition coil
I forget what the part is called, it's the thing in the distributor for the fuel injection
oil change (unrelated to problems, just needed one)

after 2 whole days in the shop, approximatly 20 hours of steady work on her (mostly troubleshooting). We finally figured out the problem... It was one of the wires that feeds the ignition coil. What was happening was, the wire was broken inside the insulation. When the Jeep would heat up, and with the right vibration, the wire would separate, shutting down the engine.

So there was no update last night because the hotel we got for last night, the wifi "wasn't working"

we slept in this morning. I needed it. My brain still hurts for all the thinking and stressing I've been doing the last couple days. I had given up, we were minutes away from renting a uhaul to tow her home. But yeah this morning, we packed the Jeep up, stopped in at Farabee's to thank Richard for all his help, stopped at a shirt store and got a couple shirts, then started driving...
I think we left Moab around 11am. Made our way up along the Colorado river, what a beautiful drive.
Got on the I70 heading toward Denver. Never realized Vail pass was there.... We climbed and climbed then when we thougt we were at the peak, we climbed some more. I think we hit 11,100ft. She was a trooper. She hicupped a couple times, scaring the sh!t out of us. But we made it!!!
Fast forward to about 9pm... It's dark, high beams don't work (never bothered fixing it). Tractor trailer following close behind us...
A big a$$ buck (deer) had to be at least a 12 pointer, runs out in front of us. We missed it. Lucky.

Anyways now we are a few miles from the Nebraska border, julesburg Colorado.

We're eating really good... Taco bell for lunch and burger king for dinner. Mmmmmmm. Barf

next update when we have wifi again

:):):):)

It's Alive

Mike,

I am sooo glad you got it running again. I spent the night you broke down tossing and
turning, racking my brain as to what it could be.

I wish I would have figured it out sooner (see page 3), it may have saved you a day.The
jeep has always been reliable.

I hope the next update is "We made it":cheers:.

Bryan

Update: we made it!!! To a rest stop 50 miles out of DES moines Iowa... Needed to stretch our legs...
Next update when we sleep... If there is wifi

Alrighty... Update full update time!

Nebraska... Flat, windy, fields, deer on the side of the road sleeping in ketchup. That is all.

Iowa... Not quite as flat, windy, windmills, and more bambi's in ketchup.

Only one minor incedent today. Everytime we stop for fuel or to eat, I always feel the tread of the tires and the hubs too see how hot they are. Anyways, we stop to fuel around 3:30. Everything was fine with tires and hubs. Next stop around 6:30... We Are pulling into gas bar and something doesn't sound right with the tires. So I get out and do my check. Front tires wearing badly... Passenger side very badly... Poked Around and noticed the jam nuts on the tie rod worked themselfs loose and the alingment got thrown off. So since in didn't have a measuring tape, we went to walmart and bought one. Jacked the front up in the parking lot and did an alignment. Back on the road about an hour later, fueling, eating, and aligning... :)

we are staying just out side davenport, Iowa. If all goes according to plan, we will be in Canada around 6-7pm.

Glad your getting a good nights sleep:ZZZ:

Seems even with the "slow downs" you've made some good miles....

thx for the updates:)

Without jinxing us, we are able to drive around 75 mph.
Hitting to road soon. :)

Wow, I'm almost glad I wasn't able to follow this all the way along, I would have been a wreck.

Great to hear that you're close.

I'll be headed home after work tonight, back around 9 EST if there should be any issues in my neck of the woods. I never did get any texts
