Welcome! Love that color combo! I think that is the highest I've ever seen the "Scrambler" lettering on the hood. There is a ton of variation on where it was placed, it seems to depend on who was working the line that day!
 
I am hearing differing opinions on a paint job. Some say repainting, even if in the original color devalues it. I've heard to just clean it up and clear coat it? Been told the "petina" of aging is desireable. I don't know? If I am going to clear coat it I'm just going to repaint original and 're decal it. I figured that would look much nicer. Thoughts?!
 
Buff and clear coat, I'm sure that will be the majority opinion. It'll only ever have it's original paint once. Some here might even pay you not to repaint it!!
 
After much consideration I think I am going to paint it. I have a fair amount of surface rust and some body work needed. I need to replace the front drivers side fender completely. How could one paint match 30 years of fading and oxidation? With everything that it needs on the body I just don't think it makes sense to maintain the petina. I need to strip the surface rust and get it protected asap. Wouldn't I be ruining the original paint just by doing that? I just see no alternative.
 
You want a CJ with some body work and paint required? I'll trade ya ;)

Hard for us to make recommendations from afar. If that's what you think is best, go for it! You might start a different thread so more eyes will see it. Here in the lurker thread, maybe not everyone is paying attention to answer your question.
 
Hello! New member here, just wanted to stop in and say hello and introduce myself. I just acquired (well, I have to go get it, but it's a busy month) a 1985 Scrambler from my former college roommate for a song. 6cyl, auto trans, twin stick t-case, 2 inch lift.l. It "ran great" when he parked it 8 years ago (!) and he had been using it as a daily driver around Gilroy CA. It's a California Jeep, (he's the third owner, all within a 100 mile radius) so it's in great shape rust-wise. He had high hopes for it as a project, but went off to med school to become a PA, then got married and had a kid, so it's not a priority for him anymore. There's two Land Cruisers in the same barn with it that his dad had the same intentions with, so I guess it runs in the family. I'm going to assume the first round of work will be evicting some mice, followed by a thorough carb clean and rebuild, and probably a fuel tank replacement (guessing there's a lot of crud in there), plus a careful look at wires and hoses. Once it's up and running, we're planning on keeping it pretty stock, but future upgrades will likely include a family cage, possibly fuel injection (though in my County I only have to smog it when I get it or sell it, so the carb isn't as big an issue), possibly a rear locker, small stuff overall. It will be moving to it's new home in Tahoe City in time to be a summer project, so I look forward to getting to pick the brains of everyone on here and getting to know some of you in the Tahoe/Reno/Carson area.

Hi my name is John Hollibaugh, I just wanted to take a second to introduce myself to everybody. I've been a member on this forum for a couple of years and with having two small children life has been pretty busy. I just haven't had any time to post. Life is still pretty busy, but I've managed to find some time. I have been collecting Jeeps since the mid-80s roughly about 30 years.

I lived in that garage for one night. I slept on the floor it was so nice. Underneath that large jeep sign and that staircase in the back. Not kidding.
 
Hello! I've been on this forum for a while, but don't believe I've ever posted. But since I'm now a proud owner of my first CJ8, guess it's time to post up. While looking for some parts for my CJ7, ended up picking up 82 Scrambler from Jim's Chop Shop on Saturday. My name is Sam Drury, live down in Southern Maryland and been an active member with Hard Rock Crawlers of Southern Maryland for 10+ yrs. First car was an 84 CJ7, 20+ years ago and have been a jeep guy since. Garage has included several CJ7's, CJ3A, 92 Wrangler, 05 LJ Rubicon, and 99 Cherokee. Am a regular at PA Jeep Show, and occasionally make it out to Rausch, Big Dogs events, and VA4WD. I believe have met a few guys on here in the past. The scrambler will be sitting for a few months as I need to free up some space in garage. Currently in middle of frame off of a 83CJ7 that am building a mild off road driver to keep, and have another 79CJ7 that will be fixing up to sell. Ultimate plan is to do a full frame off restoration of the Scrambler and will post things up then. Look forward to talking with you guys through the project.

I realize you say you have two children already but would you consider adopting? I could make myself available for adoption if so....
