Sweet table... that thickness though!
Towards the end of my career I was doing quite a bit of design & development work in the AG industry and several of my projects involved me buying a lot of steel from a large supplier over in the central valley ( they have their on rail siding). I got into a good relationship with the main sales guy and asked him to keep an eye out for "just the right chunk" for a KILLER welding table. So about a year goes by and he called me and said that he had my perfect table top. He explained that it was the "leftover" from a millrun of plates that a big customer had ordered that would be eventually Blanchard ground so care was taken to process them as flat as possible.
Of course I was stoked, but had to meekly ask: "How much $$$". He replied: "$ 600 delivered, just be sure to steer your clients our way!" Needless to say... I was their best cheerleader over here on the coast!!!!
Then rather then use the welder I had working for me, I hired a welder that specialized in "accurate big steel structures" to weld it onto the base we built in the shop. I am REALLY glad I did because the technique he used was counter intuitive but produced DEAD FLAT surface. We used micro adjust feet ( like used on milling machines), so the table turned out extremely flat and level.
You can't see in the picture, but over one end of the table is an 2 ton overhead rail for a hoist and the other end has plenty of room for my forklift, so between the two I could pick up some really big heavy stuff to work on.
